Introduction to Cells

Merry Christmas
and
Happy Holidays
from Mr. Carrison & Flash

This is going to be an old fashioned test and not scantron. The test will be only 16 questions.

1. Know the fancy name the thousands of different types of cells that all have a well defined nucleus

2. What is the scientific name for cells that are the OPPOSITE of the above? All species are bacteria, you have billions of them on and in you right NOW!

3. Photosynthesis is a ___________________________ in which s-------t is converted to ______________________ energy. The energy is stored in a molecule called _______________.

4. What organelle is in charge of making sure products coming into the cell and products that are made or moved around in the cell are of uniform and expected size?

5. The _____________________ are organelles that break down worn out cell parts or organelles so the nutrients and compounds can be re-used by the cell.

6. What is the name for the “baggie” that surrounds the nucleus on eukaryotic cells? Do prokaryotic cells have this membrane?

7. List 8 different organelles

8. Why are plants green?

9. What is a pigment?

10. What are the two MAIN differences, organelle wise, between plant and animal cells?

11. Where are ribosomes found in the cell?

12. What do ribosomes do?

13. Food, water and waste are stored in what organelle?

14. One could make a strong argument that the chloroplast is the most important organelle of all. Why?

15. Where is the DNA found in a eukaryotic cell?

16. What is DNA?

17. Photosynthesis takes place in what organelle?

18. In what animal organelle does photosynthesis take place?

19. Why are most plant cells stiffer or harder than animal cells?

You can print this study guide out and use it on the test this week!
Make sure you know all the answers to the above and have reviewed you classroom worksheets.
Good luck on the test!!!

Biomes & Succession Study Guide

Biomes & Succession Study Guide
by Mr. Carrison under the supervision of Flash

1. If you are looking at a tide pool, what marine ecosystem are you in?

2. What is the name of the next ocean ecosystem? It ends at the continental shelf.

3. Name the only marine ecosystem that never receives sunlight?

4. Another name for no light = n-- -----s-------c

5. In what marine ecosystem would swordfish most likely be found?

6. What does inshore mean? It is the opposite of offshore.

7. Be able to define diversity. What is the opposite of diversity?

8. I accidentally grabbed a few MCAS questions. One is about praying mantis and has a graph - not to be confused with a giraffe!

9. OOPS, I also liberated one where you have to read a graduated cylinder.

10. Well to be honest I grabbed 10 questions, hey the price was right! One has to do with rabbit population growth, a couple on decomposers and one about a farmer in MA who decides to stop using a 10-acre field – it is about succession or changing ecosystems.

11. There are two MCAS questions on photosynthesis.

12. One MCAS question asks “Which of the following is most responsible for the decay of dead organisms?”

13. One of the MCAS questions has a food web and asks you to pick out the consumers.

14. What other names are there for the BOREAL forest biome?

15. Simply but Bernoulli's Principal is about??? (3 words or less should do fine)

16. Name in order all four stages of PRIMARY SUCCESSION.

17. Do you know the plants that are characteristic of each stage of primary succession?

18. What is another name for the GRASSLAND biome?

19. What animals are common to the GRASSLANDS of Africa?

20. What large herbivore is hunted in Massachusetts has antlers and a white tail? They are indigenous to Scituate.

21. Scituate is located in what biome?

22. What type of precipitation would be common in a DESERT biome?

23. This biome has moose, bears, rabbets, beavers, deer and various birds. It is also know for cold winters and short summers.

24. Can you give 5 facts about each biome? You better be able to do this before the test! I would know the climate, land features as well as the plants and animals that are common to each biome.

25. Can you name each continent? What one does not have a GRASSLAND?

26. What continent is all TUNDRA?

Coupon – Redeemable for 2 points, limit ONE per customer. No cash value – good only for the Biomes & Succession - Can be only combined with one other offer or special. Not valid in Montana or Delaware.

Check out http://biology.about.com/library/weekly/aa120403a.htm for a quiz on biomes. Flash suggested that I "borrow" a few questions.

The test has only 32 questions with two matching sections, 10 multiple choice MCAS questions and 12 of my multiple choice questions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully you have:
-Notes -Read the chapter
-Studied the above questions
-Looked up any of the BINGO hints or words you had a hard time understanding or got wrong.
-Looked over your classroom handouts.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you made up any missing work? Grades close Monday at 2:30!

This is the last grade before the progress reports come out.
MAKE IT COUNT!
Good luck on the test.

Note worthy is that numerous dinosaurs and old plants were burned and turned into CO2 in the making this study tool.

Fine Print: Bring in a single sheet with ALL the above printed on it with any one picture from this blog as a watermark. Your name must be computer printed at the top of the paper. Remember, one sheet, your name printed on it an a watermark! You can use it on the test and redeem it for 5 bonus points test day. ALWAYS read the fine print!

Test Question Fabrication Forum

by Mr. Carrison and the Students of Team D
Gates Intermediate School
Scituate, MA

Your mission: Think up a couple of GOOD test questions for this weeks test. Post them using the COMMENTS link at the bottom of this page. The questions can be
  • Matching
  • Multiple choice
  • True or False
I will make up our test Monday night. Some of your questions may be used on the test! Questions can come from the reading, films, previous chapter review and or from class lecture.

Even if you can not come up with a question (doubtful at best!) you will still want to view you fellow student posts. This EFFORT may pay off on test day!!! Hint, hint, hint..........

Summer Science Fun Blog

Welcome Ms. Jane Greenberg and fellow class members. This blog was used by my students last year as a study guide. The deal was one or two of my students viewed the test and then made study guide questions. They then emailed them to me and I check them over and occasionally edited here and there. I added in a few pictures of my handsome hound Flash and posted the study guide to this blog. (which is FREE!) The students then posted comments and either requested help or offered help. Sadly several students choose to NOT use the study guide but MANY did. Those that took the time and effort did benefit from their efforts and had fun in the process.

Worth a try, it's easy to keep up and running, fun to set up and well received by all involved.

CLICK ON COMMENTS AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT TO SEE STUDENT INPUT. Keep in mind, you DO NOT have control over what they post! I do monitor but do not live online. There were a couple of comments I choose to delete.

Ken Carrison

Hello Gang - I will leave this blog up all summer so you have a way to keep in touch with each other. Watch for Flash and I around town on one of our many daily high adventures, he loves the attention.

Have a fun and SAFE summer and remember... Science Rules & You Are America's Future!
